ASSET – Network news: Inside 11 of NZ's top advisory firms

Since April 2007 the investment advisory industry has been hit with an unprecedented flurry of events – not many of which were particularly pleasant.

Monday, July 14th 2008, 2:35PM
ASSET's 2008 survey of some of the largest financial planning groups finds many of these groups are reorganising to meet the challenges.

There are several features in ASSET this month, including the ability for advisers to earn CPD credits. To do this all you have to do is read the selected articles and then answer a set of questions online at assetmagazine.co.nz

Features this month include:

Profile: Good as Gould – Remaking Vestar
Christchurch-based entrepreneur George Gould emerged in March this year as the surprise front-runner to buy the shop-soiled Vestar Group. Gould – along with his two captains Richard Austin and Jeff Staniland – tell David Chaplin what they saw in the flailing financial advisory firm.

How not to get FIFed off
Complexity is the mother of invention for software gurus and last year's investment tax reform has delivered the digital designers plenty of inspiration. We report on two freshly-minted systems that aim to restore simplicity to investors hit by the new foreign tax rules.

Insurance adjustment due as reforms loom
The New Zealand insurance industry is about to undergo an overhaul as regulatory and tax changes hit home. David Chaplin reports.

Also in this issue of ASSET:

Taste test: Bad a boom – Commodity joke turns serious
In the space of a few years commodity investments have gone from punchline to punching bag as speculators, previously considered deluded, now cop the blame for rising food and energy prices. Robert Holroyd, head of boutique NZ commodity firm Sirius Wealth Management, tells David Chaplin that both extremes are wrong.

Practice management: Advice documents – How to cut according to the cloth
ASSET's practice management section is designed to help advisers grow their businesses. This month we look at advice documents. As disclosure becomes a part of life for financial advisers, preparing tailor-made advice documents becomes a necessity. Adviserlink's Colin James explains how to design a statement of advice that fits perfectly.

Columns

  • Professional Advisers Association: Join together (with care) – the aggregation equation
Dr Dave McMillan explores the growing trend of adviser regulation in New Zealand and how the different business models operate.
  • Hutchinson: The name of the beast – Risk returns to real life
Death might not get good reviews, but it has never gone out of fashion. Russell Hutchinson muses that the current economic woes might force New Zealanders to acknowledge this basic reality – and help insurance advisers point out the power of protection.
  • Economy: A mind-altering statistic – The employment shrink
In the space of a quarter New Zealand's economy has taken a deeper dive than early figures suggested was likely. Donal Curtin reviews his position and finds weak employment figures support the case for the negative.
  • Tax files: Currency – Why it's easier to spell than understand
AMP Capital's Anthony Edmonds explains why currency hedging for NZ investors is not as simple as it should be.

ASSET also contains the latest fund performance data from FundSource.
