According to fund partner and founder of LW Capital Management, Lance Wiggs, the mission for the Climate Venture Capital Fund (CVCF) is to “lean into the good things”.
“This is a fund that does good. But this is such a big opportunity [for investors], the time is now, a shift is happening around the globe.”
Wiggs says that there is a lot that separates the CVCF from other responsible investment funds, and it is not just its hardline VC attitude.
“A lot of funds say ‘this is what we won’t do’. What this fund does is it says we are only investing in good things. We are leaning heavily into climate.
“You should have this as part of your portfolio, one because it is the right thing to do, and two, it is a hedge against everything else.”
Another element that sets this fund apart is its climate impact committee.
“Our committee is formed of people who really know what they are doing in measuring the impact of our investments on the environment and particularly in carbon emissions.
“You have to understand government policy, you have to understand sustainability and broader impact – we have good people who help us in this space.
“Venture capital investing is a constant apprenticeship. You learn by doing. After seven years we have a few scars but we have learned a lot.”
