Govt deadline for earthquake risk masonry repair
Building and Construction minister Nick Smith announced the new requirement in a speech on government initiatives which are intended to better manage earthquake risks.
He said the government has been given seismic advice that, following last year’s Kaikoura earthquake, Wellington, Lower Hutt and Blenheim are currently exposed to eight times the normal risk of a quake.
This heightened risk will abate to about twice the norm by year’s end but not to normal levels until 2020.
Smith said this meant a scenario is possible, as in Christchurch, where an aftershock occurs in this period close to one of these centres causing significant loss of life.
