The Great Reset?
ome events, like oil shocks, have clear and well-defined implications. Other events change the rules and force a rethink of everything. COVID-19 is a rule changing event.
For investors and companies, this is an existential event where capital may need to be redeployed and strategies recessed with some only working by accident the way the stopped clock sometimes tells the right time. This is where markets excel - discarding companies whose models no longer work and moving that capital to new companies whose business models show more promise.
Public policy quite rightly is focused on minimizing the damage, which is only a small distance from a policy of reducing change. Markets, in contrast, need to embrace change. Supporting business models that work, and starving those that do not, is how economies adapt to new circumstances. Make sure that your portfolios are positioned to avoid the failures and enjoy the success stories.
