Which star signs are the best savers in the Zodiac?

Okay so you are not very good with money but is it your fault or was it preordained in the stars?

Spent all your savings on a millennium party? Took all your money out of equities because you were concerned about the millennium bug? Able to identify to the nearest $20 how much you have in your bank account?

Okay so you are not very good with money but is it your fault or was it preordained in the stars?

Research from the Association of Investment Trust Companies (AITC) in the United Kingdom shows that the easy winners are Cancer and Leo with 73 per cent of each star sign having money safely tucked away. But Pisces need to try harder - 51 per cent of them do not have a penny saved.

And there is no point asking Aquarians and Taureans for a loan – 40 per cent of Aquarians and Taureans regularly spend between 91 per cent and 100 per cent of their entire monthly salary and never have any spare cash.

What does your star sign mean

Sagittarius

Like PEPs, ISAs and stockmarket investments

Capricorn

Keen on clearing the debts first

Aquarius

Big spenders

Pisces

No savings in reserve

Aries

Quite big spenders, quite big savers – financially unremarkable!

Taurus

Big spenders

Gemini

12 per cent don’t have a clue how much they spend a month

Cancer

Money in reserve

Leo

The premier savers of the Zodiac

Virgo

Think they are poor with money and want to be better

Libra

The spendthrifts of the stars

Scorpio

Spend more than they earn

Who thinks they are good with their money?

A third of Virgoans think they are bad with money while 13 per cent of Pisces think they are terrible with money and wish they were better. Over 80 per cent of Leos, the best savers of the zodiac, think they handle their money well while nearly 20 per cent of Librans think they are excellent with their money, a statistic which is not supported by the evidence! 5 per cent of Librans spend more than they earn each month along with 4 per cent of Scorpians.

*PEPs/ ISAs and savings plans
The entire zodiac would always choose a bank or building society as its first port of call for saving. But if you aspire to being a millionaire of the future, you need to examine your attitude to equities.

Sagittarians and Geminis are the biggest fans of PEPs, ISAs and savings plans. The least likely to be stockmarket investors in the Zodiac are Pisceans and Capricorns.

Looking at direct equity investment, the pattern is repeated with 16 per cent of Geminis preferring direct equity investments to wrapper products such as ISAs. 14 per cent of Sagittarians are also fans of stockmarket investment. Again Pisceans and Capricorns would rather pay off their credit card bills or invest in the building society before considering the stockmarket.

AITC public relations manager Annabel Brodie-Smith says, "I can sympathise with the spendthrifts as I am a Libran who has little cash to show at the end of every month! Quite rightly, everyone considers a bank or a building society to be the most appropriate place for their savings in the first instance and we endorse this view. But most people want to beat low interest rates and inflation-proof their money. One excellent way of doing this is through an investment trust which allows you to spread your investment risk."

"And investment trusts can offer a range of risk profiles to cater for the most adventurous as well as the most nervous stockmarket investor."

* PEPs and Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) offer UK investors tax-incentives to save. They are similar to the popular 401(k) plan in the United States.
