Fund Manager of the Year Award Nominees

Five managers are in the running for this year's FundSource Fund Manager of the Year Award, including three past winners.

Tuesday, October 23rd 2001, 10:11PM

Armstrong Jones and BNZ Investment Management are competing for the overall gong against past winners, BT Funds Management, AMP Henderson and Tower Asset Management.

The winner of the 10th annual FundSource award will be announced on Friday morning.

FundSource determines the overall winner by analysing a manager's past performance. With each manager it takes a representative fund from each of the four main asset classes, then calculates the value add in each six month period up to June 30.

Once the average value add over this period is calculated for each fund, the scores are added up on a weighted basis with diversified funds accounting for 40%, international shares 30% and bonds/income and NZ/Australian shares 15% each.

The manager with the highest performance rating is crowned the overall winner.

Besides the overall winner there is hot competition in the New Zealand and international equities sectors where there are four nominations each. All the other sectors have just two nominees. The exception being in diversified defensive funds where there are no nominees.

NZ Funds Management has the most nominations for sector prizes (four), however it is barred from entering the overall award because it contracts asset allocation and manager selection to FundSource.

AMP, BNZ, BT, and Tower all have three sector nominations, while Guardian Trust/Royal & SunAlliance have two and AXA and AJ have one each.
