Insurance site set to launch

A new website designed to educate members of the public about personal insurance products is set to launch in the first quarter of this year.

Life-Info.org.nz is being launched by David Whyte and Brian Klee.

Whyte is a former general manager of AIA in New Zealand and Klee, a retired broker, still helps clients with difficult claims.

They are in the process of raising $30,000 to fund the site’s development. It is based on sites such as lifehappens.org, which operate overseas.

Whyte said it would be an objective tool that would educate the public about the products available, and add to the financial literacy work being done by the Commission for Financial Capability.

“We need to make people understand that if for some reason their path to retirement is interrupted, protection mechanisms are available. They need to know what they are and how they work without being inundated with inducements to buy and sales pressure.”

He said the response to the idea from the industry, including the insurance companies, had been positive.

Whyte said he expected to have moved forward with the project by the end of the month and for the site to be live in the first quarter of 2016.

“It’s worked overseas so there is no reason why it should not work here. With the focus on financial literacy it seems sensible that there needs to be some resource that complements the KiwiSaver and investment-type resources, that is objective and dispassionate.”
