The research house has released the finalists for its Fund Manager of the Year awards.
AMP Capital, Harbour Asset Management and Milford Asset Management are in the running for the New Zealand Fund Manager of the Year award.
AMP Capital, Harbour Asset Management and Russell Global Fixed Interest are in the running for the fixed interest gong.
Devon, Harbour and Milford are finalists for New Zealand equities, AMP and Elevation are the final two for international equities, and ASB, Mercer and Milford are the three KiwiSaver finalists.
Morningstar's director of manager research ratings for Asia-Pacific, Chris Douglas, said the New Zealand landscape was evolving with new managers coming in. But he said there were a number of established fund managers who continued to do well for their clients.
He said while regulation had been an issue for managers to contend with in 2016, there had still been good returns available.
“A fair amount of volatility came back in around New Zealand equities and fixed interest assets as well in the last quarter, but we finished the year in positive territory.”
He said it was worth noting that some managers were still producing double-digit returns.
