Q. I feel there must be others out there like us, who have woken up to the fact that, while they earn reasonable money, they can't afford the $350,000 plus required to buy a freestanding house in central Auckland, with the prospect of having children.

Because of work contacts this requires us to live in Auckland (otherwise we probably wouldn't).
We rent a great house in an inner-city suburb, which we think is cheap at $320 per week.
We have managed to save $40,000 in six months, which is in an interest-earning cheque account...
