The council wants $1.35 million from HNZ as part of a 50/50 partnership to build a 24-unit housing development on land it owns in Richmond – on vacant land in Gowerton Place – adjoining an existing housing complex. The HNZ money will come from its local government housing fund, a $64m scheme aimed at creating a new avenue for social housing.
City housing sub-committee chairwoman Carole Anderton said the demand for council housing was huge. Intelligent partnerships between the council and government could help provide housing for those in need.
