Residents fail in bid to impose liquor ban
Ilam residents frustrated by the drunken antics of university students have failed in a bid to have Christchurch City Council impose a liquor ban in the area.

Councillors yesterday decided a liquor ban, such as that in central city public places, was not appropriate in Ilam.The decision came in response to calls from community members angry about vandalism, litter and offensive behaviour allegedly carried out by drunk university students and young people.
While the liquor ban proposal was not adopted, the council's regulatory and consents committee identified various other ways to address residents' concerns, including:
Encouraging the University of Canterbury Students' Association to liaise during parties and encourage responsible activities.
