DOC this week formally introduced rules to remove or charge them.About 990 private baches, huts and camping grounds occupy public conservation land nationally.
DOC's general policy, released by Conservation Minister Chris Carter after more than a year of consultation, says existing private accommodation should be phased out and eventually removed.
Also, rent should be charged for existing accommodation, including camping grounds, the policies say.
Some privately owned accommodation will be allowed, however, provided it has a DOC-issued concession and is open to the public or is for public recreation and educational and community services.
