The camping ground would be called "Aroasis" and would accommodate 10 smaller campervans. Wellington City does not have a camping ground, the nearest being in Lower Hutt. The facility, planned for the former Shell site at 68 Aro St, would include showers, an office and a lounge area, but would not have waste-disposal facilities.
In their resource consent application to Wellington City Council, Sarah and Ben Spencer say the camping ground would cater for short stays of one to three days.
The site would "recreate as far as possible a typical New Zealand camping site in the middle of the city", with landscaping and native trees, and would target "independent road warriors" who are "one up" from backpackers.
A camping ground would provide a stopping place for tourists who now parked their vans along the south coast and the green belt, the application said.
