The New Plymouth District Council has worked with a group of community representatives to develop a streetscape design to develop Oakura's identity and improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.Stage one of the upgrade has been completed and work on stage two will begin at the end of February.
The project is due to be finished in May 2006, and timed to miss the Christmas and New Year period.
Council projects manager Jeff Bondy said the streetscape had been designed to encourage drivers to slow down by creating an environment that felt less like part of a state highway and more like a central urban area.
"I think the community representatives have helped the council develop a streetscape that is aesthetically pleasing, while also balancing the demands of public safety and cost."
