Landlord of the Year announced

The Landlord of the Year awards were held at the New Zealand Property Investors' Federation (NZPIF) conference over the weekend in Auckland.

Debbie Van Deb Broek of the Rotorua Property Investors' Association was named Landlord of the Year for 2009, while Jan and Lyle Galloway, and Chris and Robita Johnston were named as runners up.

"All finalists in the Landlord of the Year award demonstrated the value of getting it right when managing their rental properties. It makes good business sense to treat tenants as valued customers," said Jeff Montgomery, client services manager for award sponsor Department of Building and Housing.

Debbie has been in the business of property investing and landlording for the past 20 years. She and husband Ed own rental and holiday accommodation in the Rotorua area.

Debbie invests long-term. She employs a gardener who maintains the gardens and the edges, while tenants mow their own lawns. This ensures the properties are always clean, tidy and well looked after.

She also allows tenants to own pets, which makes her property sought-after as rentals allowing pets are hard to find.

Auckland PIA members Jan and Lyle decided that property investment best met their criteria as a wealth creation vehicle after attending a seminar in the early 1990s. Initially heavily-geared and doing all renovating themselves, they now employ people to help them in renovating their properties.

Some of Jan and Lyle's tenants have been with them for over 15 years. Jan is also a member of the APIA board.

The other runners up are from Tauranga PIA. Chris and Robita started investing in property seven years ago, after reading books by Robert Kiyosaki and Dolf De Roos.

Since then, they have acquired nine residential properties which they have steadily maintained and improved.

"This annual award gives us the opportunity to highlight the professionalism of the many members up and down the country who are landlords," said NZPIF president Martin Evans. "This is a very knowledgeable group of people."
