Andrew Bayly has resigned as Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and ACC after an incident with a staff member which he describes as inappropriate.
In a statement, the senior National MP says concerns have been raised about last week’s incident and he apologises, accepting his behaviour towards the staff member was overbearing.
“As many of you know, I have been impatient to drive change in my ministerial portfolios.
“Last week, I had an animated discussion with a staff member about work. I took the discussion too far, and I placed a hand on their upper arm, which was inappropriate.”
“I have apologised to the staff member and regret placing them in an uncomfortable position,” the statement reads.
Bayly has offered his resignation to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who has accepted. Scott Simpson will take over Bayly’s ministerial portfolios and Bayly will remain MP for Port Waikato.
