Tuesday, August 24th 2004, 9:47AM
Hanover Group Ltd has appointed Sir Tipene O’Regan as an independent director of Hanover Financial Services Ltd and its four main finance subsidiaries.

Hanover Group Ltd executive chairman, Mark Hotchin, said the appointment recognised the need to have independent directors on the board to satisfy contemporary requirements for transparency and high governance standards, even among privately owned companies.

O’Regan is deputy chair of Transit New Zealand and at Meridian Energy Limited. He is a senior research fellow at the University of Canterbury, in addition to several other directorships in both New Zealand and Australia. He is also a distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors, and holds two honorary degrees. His prior positions also included being a past director of TVNZ, chairman of the Ngai Tahu Maori Trust Board, chairman of the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission and chairman of the Sealord Group Ltd from 1992 until 2002.
