Hawkesby has spent nine years at the Bank of England where he has held a number of senior positions including head of Market Intelligence, chief manager of the Sterling Markets Division and private secretary to the Deputy Governor, Sir John Gieve.
Harbour's managing director Andrew Bascand says the company is pleased to have someone of Hawkesby's calibre join Harbour.
While Hawkesby was in the Bank of England's dealing room, he was responsible for analysis and research, relationships with London and Edinburgh asset managers, designing and launching the special sterling corporate bond scheme and advising on the Bank's purchase of £200bn UK government bonds for quantitative easing.
"The appointment confirms our commitment to invest in our business and to offer a full service asset management business, providing equity and fixed income funds to wholesale and retail investors in New Zealand," says Bascand.
Christchurch-born, Hawkesby began his career at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1998 where he was both an analyst in the NZ cash, fixed income and FX markets, and an economist running the RBNZ macroeconomic model.
A graduate of the University of Canterbury, Christian has a Masters of Commerce (with 1st class-honours) majoring in Economics, and was awarded the Economics Society Prize and a post graduate Senior Scholarship.
"It is encouraging that Christian has elected to return to New Zealand to further his career and chosen to join Harbour and lead our fixed income team. He will provide additional depth to New Zealand's financial and investment community," Bascand says.
