A couple of lines in one of those soppy email messages caught my eye the other day. "I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess," it read.

Maybe that partly explains the appeal of shares and property. If your savings are all in term deposits, of course they will grow every year. But you don't get the buzz of big unexpected gains, especially after losses.
