Dr Hyde, who will report to chief investment officer Stephen Gilmore, will take up his new role on July 1.

The Guardians of NZ Superannuation is the Crown entity that manages the $58 billion NZ Super Fund and Gilmore says he is pleased to be able to make an internal appointment to one of the key investment roles at the Guardians, following an extensive external search process.

“The asset allocation team is the unifying force behind our investment decision-making and I look forward to working with Charles and his team as the NZ Super Fund continues to grow,” Gilmour says.

As head of asset allocation, Dr Hyde will oversee the construction of the fund’s reference portfolio, the allocation of risk capital across the fund and the Guardians’ economics function.

Dr Hyde joined the Guardians in 2015 as a senior investment strategist and chaired one of the Guardians’ risk budgeting teams.

He has been closely involved in several key projects including the 2020 review of the reference portfolio, reviews of the Guardians’ investment hurdles and proxies, and the Guardians’ climate change strategy.

He has also been involved in developing the Guardians’ equity factors investment strategy.

Dr Hyde’s previous roles include head of quantitative research at MIR Investment Management, head of equities research and equity quant strategies at CBA Institutional Equities Research, and principal economist for transfer pricing at Deloitte.

Dr Hyde has also held several academic roles in finance and economics at Macquarie University, the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne.

He has a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
