Some of the best and brightest members of the Financial Advice NZ community were honoured at an online awards ceremony yesterday as part of the organisation's annual conference (see list of winners below).

According to the judges, for over 30 years, Share's Richard Thomas has made an outstanding contribution to the financial services sector, "going above and beyond to champion the profession".

However, the first award of the day was the Rising Star Award given to Lauren Hunter from Mike Pero.

The judges say Hunter is a "role model...and the benchmark for new advisers entering the industry".

The winner of this year's Outstanding Adviser of the Year is Daniel Smithwood from IronOak.

The judges described him as a person who "believes that insurance is, first and foremost, a relationship business and invests significant energy into forging trusting relationships with clients".

Smithwood "considers education and professional development paramount to remaining relevant, compliant and maintaining a presence at the leading edge of the sector," they said.

Two Community Service awards were made this year, to Total Wealth's Katrina Studholme and Zebunisso Alimova from Mike Pero.

Studholme led a financial advisers response to the Christchurch mosque attacks in 2019 providing pro-bono advice to those impacted by the attack.

Alimova has provided bilingual services to the Russian speaking community as well as assistance to immigrants, helping them feel welcome in her adopted city of Wellington.

The final award was the presentation of the inaugural Tate Scholarship of $5000 to the top CFP professional and went to Radhika Beetham from Lifetime.

The scholarship recognises the commitment of financial advisers in obtaining qualifications and continuing professional development at the highest pinnacle of a CFP professional.

congratulations to all reciipients; but my special congratulations to Richard. A very worthy recognition to an old adversary, colleague & friend...he has undoubtedly help re-shape the industry through his entrepreneurialism and contributed heavily to elevating standards over a VERY extended period of time. I am delighted with this selection and pleased to see him obtain the recognition.

Congrats Thomo, a true legend of our profession and someone I'm very proud to call a good friend.
Still a few years left in the old dog yet....
Also Dan Smithwood, well done, was a great time you being part of Advice4Life in the beginning, thoroughly deserved.
