Gilmore, who has spent the last five years as CIO of the $73 billion NZ Super Fund, will leave the Guardians of NZ Superannuation at the end of June. He is expected to start at the CalPERS (California Public Employees' Retirement Scheme), which is based in Sacramento and has US$494b under management, in July.
Guardians acting CEO Paula Steed says Gilmore has made a significant contribution to the sophistication of the NZ Super Fund since he joined in early 2019, a period in which the fund has grown by more than $30b, nearly doubling in size.
She says he has championed the role of new technology to improve investment decision-making, and has been key in the shift towards a sustainable investment approach.
Gilmore says the Guardians of NZ Superannuation has an inspirational purpose and is, in many respects, world leading.
He will succeed Nicole Misicco, who left CalPERS in September and who according to US Pensions and Investments became the second straight CIO to leave after only 18 months in the job.
