Asteron Life internship a career launching opportunity for AUT student

The first AUT graduate to go through Asteron Life’s claims team internship is set to graduate this year.

Tuesday, October 22nd 2024, 11:07AM

Andy Liao, who is completing a Bachelor of Health Science (Case Management) took part in the new programme, which is designed to help produce graduates with a better understanding of insurance and the role of claims management.

Asteron Claims manager Scott Jensen said the internship would be an important tool in attracting a pipeline of new talent into life insurance roles.

“In offering these internships, we are helping ensure early career claims managers are aware of the opportunities that exist in life insurance companies, the difference that life and personal insurance providers make in people’s lives every day, and the benefit good case management has on claims outcomes,” he said.

Liao said he thought of insurance as a transactional service before he started his internship, and did not appreciate the degree of customer care nor breadth of consideration insurers would take in providing good outcomes for customers at claims time.

“I finish my internship amazed at the level of client care I saw every day, and the focus on what is best to satisfy the unique circumstances of customers.”

Liao said the work experience had helped him build his people engagement skills, as well as better understanding the importance of showing empathy, listening and understanding visual cues that might indicate what was happening for a client.

‘These are really important skills for new case managers to have and ones that are not too common for people of my generation to be skilled at. Work experience at Asteron Life has been a comprehensive learning experience for me and one that I will use to build the next stage of my career.”
